Stuart Court Extension & Refurbishment Proposal

The Stuart Court Extension & Refurbishment Proposal sets out MHA Jersey’s plans to modernise and future-proof one of its most important care homes. The project includes a sensitive three-storey extension, increasing the number of rooms from 28 to 50, alongside a comprehensive refurbishment of the existing listed building. Improvements will enhance accessibility, safety, energy efficiency, and shared spaces, while preserving the warm, homely character residents value. Delivered in carefully managed phases, the works will allow residents to remain in the home throughout. This investment reflects MHA Jersey’s long-term commitment to dignity, comfort, and high-quality care for Jersey’s ageing community.

A Joint Message from the Chair of the Board and Chief Executive

As a Board and organisation, we have been reflecting on the 60 years since the formation of Methodist Homes for the Aged Jersey and on the care, community, and compassion that have been at the heart of our work for generations. This important milestone has given us an opportunity to look ahead and consider how we can continue to support our residents, both now and into the future.

The proposed extension and refurbishment of Stuart Court are an important part of this journey. The plans aim to modernise the home, provide additional rooms, create more space, and improve accessibility, helping to ensure that Stuart Court remains a comfortable, welcoming, and supportive place to live.

We are very mindful of Stuart Court’s history and setting. Great care is being taken to ensure that the design of the extension and all associated works are sensitive to the character of the existing listed buildings and enhance them wherever possible. Preparing the planning application is the first step in this process. Before moving forward with securing funding, we would warmly welcome any thoughts, questions, or feedback you may wish to share.

If you would like to get in touch, you are very welcome to contact us at CEO@mhajersey.org or by phone 872454

With our thanks,
Anne Pryke – Chair of the Board
Gerard McCormack – Chief Executive

FAQs

Should planning permission be obtained, we will as a registered charity, be eligible to apply for funding and seek donations to help address the current funding shortfall before appointing builders. All going well, we expect to have the necessary funding in place for construction to commence in 2027/28.

Planning application to be submitted in the first half of the year expecting to receive a decision towards the end of 2026.

No. The works will be completed in phases so residents can remain in the home throughout.

• The extension will be built first.
• Once the new rooms are ready, residents will move into them.
• This will allow the existing building to be refurbished while residents are comfortably accommodated.
• After refurbishment, the modernised rooms will be available for new residents.

We understand the importance of a calm environment. To minimise disruption:

• Contractors will use noise- and dust-reduction measures.
• Work will be scheduled to avoid the home’s busiest times of day.
• Modern construction methods and prefabricated sections will be used where possible to shorten the time spent on site.
• By building the extension first, residents can move into brand-new bedrooms before refurbishment begins, reducing disruption inside the existing building.

Yes. Access to communal areas will be maintained wherever possible. If any spaces need to be temporarily closed, suitable alternatives will be provided.

The extension and refurbishment will be delivered in carefully managed stages over approximately two years. We will provide regular updates as the project progresses.

We will share regular updates through:

• Meetings
• Newsletters
• Noticeboards within the home
• Our website mhajersey.org
